Doug Mass is the President of Cosentini Associates, internationally recognized in the design and construction industry because of his expertise as a mechanical engineer, his commitment to design innovation, and a long list of high-performance building projects designed by leading architects. Cosentini Associates is one of the nation’s premiere MEP and technology engineering firms, with a history of iconic projects over the last 70 years. His work in the area of LEED/sustainable design has involved design commissions from both corporate and government clients who have sought his assistance on the development of building systems that are energy efficient, ensure occupant comfort, and promote the preservation of the environment.

Doug’s career spans more than 40 years and includes pioneering achievements such as the design of the first sustainable high-rise office building in Manhattan (4 Times Square), the first LEED Gold residential high-rise in the country (The Solaire in New York City’s Battery Park City) and the 3rd tallest building in the world (Shanghai Tower, which received LEED Platinum certification). As part of the Tetra Tech High Performance Buildings Group, Doug spearheaded the development of an award-winning COVID-19 task force and worked with the Aspen Institute to develop Restaurant Safety guidelines which have been widely used and distributed in the restaurant and food-service industry. In addition to his contribution to designing healthy buildings, Doug has developed innovative decarbonization solutions for buildings and has overseen the design of several all-electric buildings.

Doug’s dedication to the education of future engineers and architects is evident in his service at Columbia University’s School of Architecture, New York University (NYU), and at his alma mater, Brown University. He is also a committed lecturer who has spoken extensively on sustainable design and underfloor air system design at the US Department of State, the New York City Economic Development Corporation, and ASHRAE. He has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Brown University, is a registered engineer in 26 states and two Canadian provinces, and is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and serves on the board of the Salvadori Center. Doug is also a member of the ACEC-NY Safety Committee and the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) Zoning and Design Committee.
